Dehumidifier Box
A dehumidifier box is a small, containerized moisture absorber for closed residential and commercial spaces. It usually consists of a plastic housing unit filled with high-capacity desiccant crystals (i.e. calcium chloride) that absorbs humidity from the surrounding air, converting it into liquid brine to be captured in a sealed bottom reservoir. They are usually freestanding, allowing them to be placed in closets, basements, bathrooms or underneath sinks to prevent mold, mildew, or mustiness. The dehumidifier box works best in damp-area spaces less than 30m³ – it has visible saturation indicators, and some come with disposable/replaceable refill cartridges, allowing low-maintenance usage. Unlike electric dehumidifiers that continuously run on power and make a noise, dehumidifier boxes operate silently, with no electric power usage – making them a great energy-efficient option for seasonal humidity control in storage room and spaces such as RVs, garages, or utility areas. Safety and Reliability Risks
- The dehumidifier box presents persistent safety issues that involve overheating and burning, resulting in large recalls. Some have a chemical additive (i.e. disinfectants) and if leaking, can cause respiratory concerns and contamination. There's a greater risk with encapsulation and non-toxic formulation.
Performance Limitations
- Effectiveness is highly variable across environments. The humidity ceiling or area limits within spaces are quickly reach and then limiting moisture control. Units are poor at extreme temperatures, and thus are inefficient in sub-zero temperatures and have limited utility during heat waves - which restricts reliability in many environments.
