Desiccants for the food industry are essential for protecting food products, ingredients, and packaging from damaging moisture within their distribution supply chain. These desiccants may come as silica gel sachets, clay vessels, molecular sieve bags, or activated carbon units, and actively sorb humidity. The role of the desiccant is prevent spoilage, mold growth, caking, texture change, flavor loss, and corrosion of metal packaging, thereby controlling shelf life and, ultimately, product safety and quality from source manufacture to point of end use.
 
Good food desiccants are critical components for controlling moisture in packaged foods (snack foods, spices, dried products), bulk ingredients, food-focused pharmaceutical applications, and/or sensitive processing equipment. They must be produced using rigorously tested, food-grade materials, and produced with regard to strict fiscal and international food regulatory indication, both the FDA (USA) and EU food contact requirements.
